NAVAJO NATION LOOP Ruins - Trading Knifes - Hubbell Trading post

We decided to do the grand loop (450 miles!) of Navajo Nation - Page to Kayenta to Chinle to Ganado to Sanders to Petrified Forest NP to 40 west to Meteor crater NM to 89 North to Sunset Volcano & Wupatki NM to Vermillion cliffs NM where we ended up just about where we started in Page!  We arrived in Navajo National Monument on March 26th, camped at their free campground (it was nice!). It was cold and in the 30's and snowing but we still managed to take a hike to view the Cliff dwellings. This is Navajo Nation and you are not allowed to hike to Ruins.

Next stop was Canyon De-Chelly NM on March 27th where we hooked up with Geni's sister Robin and husband Dave for three days. This is also Navajo nation but your can hire Navajo's to take you into there Native land. We did just that and hire a driver for a 5 hour tour from beauty tours named Dave, did we get lucky he was born and raised inside the canyon and knew places to go that other drivers just past by! He took us to where he was born and his grandparents were born, when National Geographic came to explore the ancient ruins in the 80's they used him as a guild! We spent the whole day with him exploring the North Canyon, its many ruins, pictographs, and stunning cliff walls that tower over 1000' above us! It was an amazing trip that I will remember my whole life! Along the park route on the paved roads above there are many Navajo's selling there handmade goods jewelry, paintings, etc. I decided to see if they would still trade goods as they use to do. I had a new buck knife that I asked the Navajo women if she traded ?, she looked at me a little confused as im sure no one ask this anymore. She ask what I had and showed her my new Buck knife, she liked it and ask what I wanted in trade, I told her the hand beaded circle of life bracelet that my sister-in-law was admiring, it was a outstanding piece of art!  She said OK! I gave the beautiful bracelet to my lovely Sister-in-law. I also traded again later in the week as we neared Vermillion Cliffs where I traded a Navajo women a new Buck knife for a beautiful hand made piece of Pottery. So they look at you kind of funny when you ask them but they still do trading in Navajo Nation just like they used to 100 years ago!

Next stop was the Hubbell Trading NM post in Ganado, AZ. The trading post remains as it did in the mid 1800's . They still sell original Navajo and Hopi handmade jewelry, blankets, pottery, artwork, baskets. However it is not a real trading post any longer, they do not trade here for knifes!
